RICHARD M. ALLMAN, MD

Richard M. Allman, MD is a board-certified geriatrician with more than 30 years of experience as a physician leader for inter-professional programs in aging. He currently is Clinical Professor of Medicine at George Washington University in Washington, DC, Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and he serves as an executive coach and as an independent consultant. Dr. Allman was the national policy leader for Geriatric Medicine, Palliative Care, home and community-based long-term services and supports, and nursing home care for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC for 4.5 years. Before assuming this national leadership role for the VA, Dr. Allman was the Parrish Endowed Professor of Medicine and Director, Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care, and the Director of Comprehensive Center for Healthy Aging at UAB. He was also the founding Director of the VA-based Birmingham & Atlanta Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC). He has more than 180 peer-reviewed research publications. His research has focused on mobility, cardiovascular disease, quality measurement and improvement, and health disparities among older adults. He received his MD and completed a residency in internal medicine at the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine. He then did a fellowship in internal medicine and obtained training in clinical epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Allman has served as a volunteer for ministries in Christian education, music, and health care. He has made more than fifteen foreign medical mission trips.
