Professional Experience Bill has over 35 years of experience in communications, advertising, marketing and brand development for regional, national and Fortune 500 companies.

He worked in Birmingham on the corporate side in communications for Alabama Power Co. and Central Bancshares of the South, a multi-billion-dollar financial company. Subsequently, he was in the advertising agency business for most of his career serving large financial clients, hospitals, manufacturers, real estate developers and other categories throughout the country. Bill developed a model for organizational change for corporations and businesses to enhance a liberating culture, and their vision, values and brand.

His last full-time work experience was serving 15 years as partner of SlaughterHanson, a nationally acclaimed advertising and branding firm headquartered in Birmingham.

Bill retired from SlaughterHanson in 2003, and since has conducted brand development consulting for clients such as University of Alabama, and real estate development companies in Alabama and Florida.

Community Service: He has been an active server on several art and cultural boards, and as leader serving professional and non-profit organizations. He was Chairman of the Board of Visitors for the College of Communications and Informational Sciences at the University of Alabama, and currently remains on the Board for the College. He recently received The Dean’s Medal for outstanding dedication, commitment and service to the College. He and his wife established The Endowed International Experience Fund at the College. He once served on the Board of Trustees for the Birmingham Area Chamber, Birmingham Broadway Series Board, twice Board President of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and served on the Boy Scouts and Vulcan Foundation, and others. He served on the board of Unity Church of Birmingham, and currently attends Mountain Brook Community Church.

Personal Cameo Bill and his wife Judy have a strong passion for international travel, and a desire to inspire that passion, curiosity and adventure in others. They have been instructors at Samford University, “Samford After Sundown” teaching their experiences “Europe On Your Own—the True European Experience,” as well as at other venues. Bill said, “There’s never been a road I didn’t want to go down and see what’s there.” They’ve traveled around the world several times, to Europe over 50 times immersing themselves in the local cultures, explored 7 continents, hiked regularly in numerous countries, and traveled to peripheral places like Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal and The Sahara Desert. His mantra is “Don’t sit on the shoreline, choose to chance the rapids, dare to dance the tide,” lyrics from a popular song.

Bill has authored an inspirational and travel book “I Can fly,” in which he states that “International travel can help us explore the unfamiliar and reset our cognitive boundaries. It can offer—beyond our expectations—critical life lessons, immersion, joy and connectivity to different cultures, people, norms, and means of healing: all essential to effective interaction with a global village.” He likes the intro passage in his book from Mark Twain: “So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.”

Bill also has a passion for Western US fly fishing, golf, and enjoys tennis and working out. He describes himself as having a lot of imagination, a soft spot for dogs, a daily lover of fresh flowers, and a person richly blessed by his faith and the grace of God. He is forever grateful for God’s love, joy, peace, hope, forgiveness and many other fruits of the Spirit that is graciously showered upon him.
